Daniel Cohn-Bendit

Daniel Cohn-Bendit, born in 1945 in Montauban, France, arrived in Germany aged 13 and went to high school there. He then continued his studies in France. In 1968 he was a spokesman for the May 68 protest movement in Paris, which resulted in his residency permit as a German citizen being revoked, and he was not allowed back in the country until 1978. In 1984 he became a member of the Greens, to which he made a significant contribution in terms of  pragmatic policies. In 1987 he became an advisor to Joschka Fischer when the latter became Minister for the Environment in Hessia. In Frankfurt after the socialists and greens came to power, in 1989, he was rmade esponsible for the new Office for Multiculturalism as honorary section head. In 1994 he was elected to the European Parliament for the first time and subsequently returned temporarily to France as a candidate for leadership of the French Green Party. From 2002 he has been co-president of the Greens’ parliamentary group. He was a member of the committee for economic and monetary problems, the committee for constitutional matters and a deputy member for the sub-committee for security and defence.
