Joanna Bator - Die Hoffnung gegen alle Hoffnungen
Sandberg, Joanna Bator´s first novel, tells in a subtle and suggestive way the story of loss and hope of three generations of the Chmura family. They came to Walbrzych, a small polish town which has been part of Germany before World War II. They try to rebuild their life in an apartment still full of German ghosts. Hope against all hopes is what awaits Halina who has never had anything to loose but for Władek there is only melancholy and sadness. Their son, Stefan, marries Jadzia, a young woman who came to Wałbrzych from war devastated central Poland looking for a job. Their daughter, rebellious Dominika, is the main character of this novel in which nobody is what he or she appears to be at first. It is a story of the dreams, fears and hopes of a generation traumatized by war and flight and of the rebellion and longing for freedom of their children.
Joanna Bator
Joanna Bator, 1968 im polnischen Wałbrzych geboren, studiert in Breslau Kulturwissenschaft und Philosophie und befasst sich in wissenschaftlichen Artikeln speziell mit dem Bild der Frau. Sie publiziert in wichtigen polnischen Zeitungen und Zeitschriften. 2002 erscheint ihr erster Roman Kobieta (dt. Frau). Nach einem mehrjährigen Aufenthalt in Japan erhält sie für ihre Reportagen in Der japanische Fächer 2005 den Beata-Pawlak-Preis. Joanna Bator lehrt als Hochschuldozentin, bis 2011 unter anderem am Polnisch-Japanischen Institut für Informatik in Warschau. 2009 überrascht sie mit ihrem Erfolgsroman Piaskowa Góra (Sandberg), dessen deutsche Übersetzung 2012 ein literarisches Ereignis wird. Seither gilt sie als eine der wichtigsten neuen Stimmen der europäischen Literatur. Es folgt die Fortsetzung der speziellen Familiengeschichte mit dem Titel Chmurdalia (Wolkenfern). Für ihr jüngstes Werk Ciemno, prawie noc (2012), das während eines weiteren Aufenthaltes in Tokio entstanden ist,hat sie vergangenes Jahr die wichtigste polinische Literatur-Auszeichnung, den Nike-Preis, erhalten.
